Rationale for Phonics Curriculum
Our phonics curriculum aims to develop confident, fluent readers by building skills in decoding and recognising words. Our school follows the Sounds-Write programme to deliver phonics instruction effectively, ensuring consistency and a structured approach to learning. The Sounds-Write approach systematically introduces sounds along with blending and segmenting strategies, which are crucial for early literacy development.
By following the Sounds-Write programme we provide our students with an engaging and interactive learning experience emphasising repetition and progression. This programme helps children master phonemic awareness, understand the relationships between sounds and letters, and apply their learning to reading and writing activities. Its structure allows students to build on their skills gradually, moving from simple sounds to more complex phonemes as their confidence grows.
Our phonics curriculum is tailored to identify and support individual needs. Regular assessments are embedded to monitor progress, allowing for timely intervention where necessary. This ensures that all children can keep up and that gaps in learning are addressed early. The goal is to ensure that every child can access the full curriculum and become an enthusiastic, capable reader.
Ultimately, our approach to phonics lays the foundation for a lifetime of literacy. By focusing on systematic instruction, engagement, and tailored support, we aim to give every student the skills they need to succeed in their reading journey, setting them up for further learning and a deep love of books and language.
