Rationale for Geography Curriculum
At Burfield Academy, our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will last a lifetime. We aim to provide students with a deep understanding of geographical concepts, from the local environment to global issues, cultivating critical thinking, analytical skills, and a respect for diversity. Geography at Burfield enables pupils to develop knowledge of their place in the world and how they are interconnected with other places, people, and environments.
Our curriculum allows students to explore physical and human geography through progressive learning stages, investigating ecosystems, climates, populations, and cultures. We ensure that pupils develop map-reading skills, use geographical tools such as atlases and digital mapping, and engage with fieldwork to apply their learning in practical contexts. This strong foundation prepares them for academic progression and understanding of contemporary global challenges such as climate change, urbanisation, and resource management.
Our geography teaching is underpinned by the core belief that knowledge of geography fosters informed and active global citizens. By embedding cross-curricular links and integrating technology into our lessons, we aim to create a stimulating and relevant learning experience that equips students to contribute positively to their world.
