Rationale for Spanish Curriculum

At Burfield Academy, teaching Spanish enriches our students' learning and helps them develop linguistic skills that enhance their ability to communicate globally. Learning a modern foreign language, such as Spanish, opens doors to understanding different cultures, broadens our pupils' horizons, and fosters empathy through exposure to diverse perspectives.

The curriculum is designed progressively, introducing key vocabulary and structures from Reception through to Year 6. The foundation in early years focuses on everyday greetings and simple counting, gradually moving to more complex topics like family, home, and school by Key Stage 2. Pupils engage with Spanish through phonetic lessons, cultural stories, and interactive activities that promote speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

The Spanish curriculum incorporates our school's values and aligns with Burfield Academy's commitment to preparing students for a future in an interconnected world. This language journey equips children with the skills to be confident communicators, both linguistically and socially, enhancing their overall academic development. The ultimate goal is to ignite a passion for language learning that will continue beyond primary education.
