Rationale for Design and Technology Curriculum (DT)
At Burfield Academy, we believe that Design and Technology (D&T) are vital parts of a broad and balanced curriculum. Our D&T curriculum aims to equip pupils with the skills and knowledge to engage creatively with the designed and made world. By combining practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social responsibility, and technical knowledge, we aim to nurture the next generation of problem-solvers and innovators.
The curriculum ensures pupils develop a progressive understanding of key concepts such as materials, tools, and techniques. Through hands-on learning, they can design, build, and evaluate functional products while considering their creations' ethical, environmental, and societal impacts. Furthermore, our programme incorporates cross-curricular links, enhancing students' understanding of subjects such as science, math, and art and fostering a deeper appreciation for design's role in everyday life.
In EYFS, children begin by exploring basic construction techniques, experimenting with materials, and expressing creativity. As they progress through Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils tackle increasingly complex tasks, applying design criteria, testing their ideas, and refining their outcomes based on evaluation and feedback. By Year 6, they are equipped to approach challenges with resilience and originality, preparing them for the future technological world.
We aim to inspire pupils to think critically, solve real-world problems, and approach tasks with creativity and precision. At Burfield, we are committed to ensuring that our D&T curriculum enhances technical skills and fosters innovation and a passion for design.
