Rationale for Art Curriculum
At Burfield Academy, we believe that art is essential for developing children's creativity, imagination, and self-expression. Our curriculum encourages pupils to explore and experiment with various artistic techniques and materials, enabling them to grow in confidence and skill. We aim to nurture artistic proficiency and the ability to think critically about the visual world and their place within it.
Our art curriculum follows a carefully structured progression that ensures students build on their knowledge and techniques year by year. From early exposure to fundamental concepts such as colour theory, texture, and shape in Reception to more advanced topics like perspective, composition, and sculpture in later years, we provide a comprehensive education in art that aligns with the National Curriculum.
Through our focus on drawing, painting, and sculpture, students develop technical skills while also exploring the work of famous artists, allowing them to understand the wider context of their work. Importantly, our curriculum fosters an appreciation for different cultures, movements, and historical periods, enabling pupils to draw connections between art and the world around them.
At Burfield Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, has access to high-quality art education where their unique perspectives and creativity are celebrated. We aim for students to leave our school with a love of art and the skills to continue exploring their creativity throughout their lives.
