Under the Equality Act 2010, we welcome our general duty to eliminate discrimination, to advance equality of opportunity and to foster good relations, and our specific duties to publish information about our Academy population; to explain how we have due regard for equality and to publish equality objectives which show how we plan to tackle particular inequalities and reduce or remove them.

The headteacher has special responsibility for all Equality matters and for ensuring that children and families are not unfairly disadvantaged at Burfield.

The Academy gathers and monitors information internally on the pupil population broken down by ethnicity and gender, to check that different groups of pupils are attaining at lower rates than their peers. We do this using an assessment system called O Track.

All families are given the opportunity to identify their child’s gender and ethnicity on their application form and it is this data that we use to make these groups.

In our current cohort (2016-2017), 59% of our pupils identify as male and 41% identify as female.

There are no significant gaps in the attainment of pupils identifying as male or female at Burfield.

32% of pupils are recognised as having received support with a SEND need at some point.

30% of our pupils are eligible for free school meals.

We have no children who currently identify as having English as an additional language.

As there are so few children currently identifying in different ethnic groups it is not possible to break down attainment for these children by group.

Prejudice Related Bullying and Discrimination

There are clear procedures for dealing with prejudice-related bullying and incidents. Staff have received training in prejudice related bullying and discrimination and are aware of the need to challenge even small incidents when they occur. All prejudice related incidents are logged so that any emerging patterns can be spotted and action swiftly taken.

Equality Objectives for 2017-2018

  • Promote a greater understanding of cultural difference in the UK by partnering with a STEP school in London.
  • Create volunteering opportunities for 3 older people in our community within the school, to improve partnership working between children and older people.
  • Audit resources available in our library to ensure that people from all protected characteristics are represented and that children can borrow these books as part of day to day lending.
